Dining Out is a huge part of our culture as Americans. Our fast paced lifestyle turns eating out into either the convenient option or the needed break. What we don’t realize is the long-term effects of dining out frequently, both on our wallet and our waistline. There are a few things you can do to minimize the negative effects of eating out while maximizing the positives.
Adopting these few habits will save you lots of money and calories. There are times when a splurge is justifiable, but those should be exceptions, not the rule.
1. Skip the Appetizer. We’ve all been there. You just waited an hour and a half to be seated and by the time you are, you’re starving. Ordering an appetizer is an easy yet unnecessary way to raise your bill. Also, it will make you full before you even receive your already hugely portioned meal.
2. Split a Meal. Portion sizes are ridiculously large these days. Don’t be afraid to ask your server how large the portions are and if they would be willing to split it for you. You may feel strange at first, but your heart will thank you later. What’s better-you meal price is suddenly half off!
3. Choose your Drink Wisely. When was the last time you ordered water at a restaurant? My guess is too long ago. One of the highest profit margin items on any menu is soda pop. Not to mention the fact that it isn’t healthy for any part of your body. When ordering wine out, you usually pay two and a half to three times the price for a bottle as the restaurant paid. At least ask to see a wine list before leaving it up to the server to bring you the most expensive bottle.
This advice may seem stingy but why not give it a try? After a few tries you’ll realize that your wallet and your waistline are much happier when exercising a little restraint when Dining Out.
