How to Recognize a Scam
Filed under Finances, Money Saving TipsMar 17Thousands of people have been caught by scams throughout the years. Ponzi schemes, con artists and other scams have cost people millions and probably billions of dollars over the years. Just how do these scams operate? How can your recognize them? This could be the money saving tip that saves you the most money in your lifetime.
The first question to ask yourself is this- Is this too good to be true? Usually with a scam, the answer is yes. In order to make their scam more enticing, con artists have to make the offer as amazing as possible. In order to do this, they offer lots of money for little effort. Typically, the less effort required, or the more money being promised, is a sign of a scam. Keep that in mind.
If you figure the offer you are seeing could be legitimate, then do a little research. If you get an email that promises to pay you thousands of dollars simply by forwarding it, then research the content of that email. Is Bill Gates really giving out his fortune? The more popular scams can be found quite easily with a quick Google search like that.
If you think it could be legitimate and haven’t found any reason to think it isn’t, then examine the terms. Does it requrie you to give any personal information? Are you required to first send money? No legitimate marketing give-away requires a social security number or $400 check in order to participate. Identity theft can cost you a lot of money, so be careful with the terms.
Last of all, does this sound like something similar to a scam? Are there really that many rich princes in Nigeria? Did I even enter the lottery in the UK? How many times will Bill Gates give away his fortune? If the offer sounds similar to something you know is a scam, be careful.
Follow these tips and you will never get caught in a scam. Do your research, examine the terms, and compare the offer to known scams, and you should easily be able to identify the scams out there.
