Lower your Electric Bill
Filed under FinancesSep 3By reducing the electricity your home uses, you can save a substantial amount of money, while minimizing your carbon footprint. Here are a few ways:
1. HVAC Inspection. Have a tech come out and check your A/C and heating system to make sure it is working efficiently. For example, if your ducts are leaking, it could reduce the efficiency of the unit by 20% which just causes you to lose money.
2. Clean Regularly. Clean your air filters every month. If they are clogged, that can also reduce the efficiency of the unit.
3. Change Light Bulbs. Swap your incandescent bulbs for fluorescent. It can save you almost $30 a year because they use less energy and put-off less heat.
4. Close your blinds. When you have nothing blocking your rooms from the sunlight, the room will be more hot. You can also replace your blinds for window treatments that are more efficient in blocking out the sun.
5. Unplug everything. Things like cellphone chargers and microwaves suck energy, and emit heat, even when they are not in use. The ‘standby power’ for these gadgets and appliances, not in use, is around 5%-10% of residential electricity use. So just unplug them, or plug them into a power-strip that you can turn off and you will save money.
6. Use Fans. By using fans, you can make a room cooler. Make sure to unplug it though when you leave. Fans only make humans cooler, not rooms.
