So unemployment is now reaching double digit figures in some states. If you are one of those unfortunate workers who has been laid off, don’t fear. I know things may look gloomy right now, but there are literally thousands of available jobs out there. You just have to know where to look.

You may be familiar with monster.com or careerbuilder.com as typical places to look for a job. While these sites are good, they are usually looking for trained professionals in certain industries. If your industry isn’t hiring, that’s bad news for you. But there are other places to look.

First, try Craig’s List. It’s essentially an online classifieds. People post all sorts of jobs all the time, often without any experience required. Your local newspaper will also have a classifieds section. Check them out too, sometimes they’re available online.

But to me, the real money maker is college newspapers. College students are typically unskilled, untrained and uneducated. The type of employers placing classified help wanted ads in college newspapers are looking for anyone who is willing to do anything.

So as far as looking for jobs goes, you just have to be willing to do anything. Could you work in fast food? Could you be a carpenter’s assistant? Could you assist an elderly widow? Could you work in data entry? You see, the beautiful thing is these companies and employers aren’t looking for something very long term. They know students are transient and count on them being gone after a few years.

Chances are after a few years you will be able to find employment in your industry again, so you won’t need a job like that for very long anyway. To go along with this, there has been a huge migration of illegal immigrants back to Central America. There’s just not a ton of work for them to do.

Well now their jobs are becoming available. Can you paint? Work in construction? How about landscaping? Cleaning and janitorial? There is always a need for these kinds of jobs, and these are the jobs many of the illegal immigrants were doing. Their departure opens up some more employment opportunities for you.

The best advice I can give would be this: get creative in your job hunt and be willing to do anything. Your next job doesn’t have to be permanent, it just has to pay the bills until you can get back into your industry again. Don’t get hung up trying to compete for few jobs in your industry that are opening up. Get yourself out there and do the things few others are willing to do, and you may not make much, but you can certainly find a job.
